Frequently Asked Questions

What is a tintype?

A tintype is a handmade photograph created using mid-19th-century wet plate chemistry. The image is exposed onto a blackened metal plate and developed on the spot. Because each plate is poured, exposed, and processed by hand, every tintype is singular and unrepeatable — a true heirloom piece. Many tintypes from the 1800s are still in beautiful condition today.

Will I get to watch the process?

Yes. Most people find this to be their favorite part. You’ll see the plate coated, exposed, and developed — the image appears before your eyes within minutes.

How long is a session?

Sessions are typically around 30-40 minutes depending on how many tintypes you’d like to make.

Can I take more than one?

Definitely. You can decide before or during your session. Additional tintypes are discounted after the first one.

What should I wear?

Wear something that feels like you, but keep these tips in mind:

  • Textures and patterns (lace, knits, denim, layers) photograph beautifully.

  • Avoid solid white or solid black (unless wedding attire).

  • Coming with another person? Choose contrasting colors and textures so you don’t visually blend together.

  • If unsure, bring extra options — I’m happy to help decide.

Do I need to sit perfectly still?

Not for long. The flash exposure is instantaneous — the only stillness needed is while I focus.

Will my tintype last?

Yes. Tintypes are the most archival of photographic processes and can last for hundreds of years or more.

Can I bring my pet?

Yes — pets are welcome! Just make sure to let us know in advance so we can be prepared and bring some treats— we’ll work together to make it fun!

There are marks or spots on my plate. Is that normal?

Yes — the chemistry is hand-poured and reacts uniquely each time. These subtle variations are part of the process and contribute to the tintype’s character and individuality.

Can I use my tintype commercially?

Commercial, editorial, or fashion usage is welcome — usage fees may or may not apply depending on the project. Email for a quote: oren@beacontintype.com
